This is the third in my small group of storm abstracts for this week. I did this painting study utilizing brush and stick with acrylic paints. After the storm there's a short period of time while the atmosphere is a combination of greys with the blue skies and sun attempting to push the cloud mass out.

* Full Title is "ELEMENTAL VISION - THROUGH ROTHKO'S EYES" …..which is a reference to one of my favorite contemporary American painters Mark Rothko. This piece is meant to reflect the way Mr. Rothko might have mentally visualized the color fields to the left and right of the yellow and orange zinnia flower blossom at the center of the piece. I think he would have given the greatest amount of space to the most significant feature, that being the Bright Yellow Stigma, Anthers, and Stamen...a true flowering of Retro "Modern Art" :)

This painting is a testament to the fact that an artist with a messy studio is more apt to come up with creative approaches to a painting. The basic floral painting here was kind of ho-hum. I made it to demonstrate for my class how a random field of texture and color could be made into something recognizable and exciting. Well, mine was recognizable, but far from exciting.
So it laid around on my worktable for two weeks. Meanwhile, I'm working on other things. Today I noticed that some strips of painted watercolor paper lying the chaos on my table were in a similar color palette to the painting.
I moved things around until I got to this composition. I just like the way it looks - nice color harmony and interesting composition. It's a floral painting that makes you STOP and look for a while.

Over two years ago while visiting Seattle, I was lucky enough to see quite a number of boats out on the water -- remember where I live, folks, I'm landlocked -- and so here is my ode to the sailboats near the mountains at that wonderful time of day. This is the second small acrylic study done with knife, brush and stick in different colors with the mixing done on the canvas rather than the palette. We had our first winter storm last night with lots of thunder and lightning, so this small painting reflects that for me. Luckily I did not hear any reports of major flooding with this one, that can be a big problem here in Hawaii. No snow to contend with but water can sure do some major damage. So just the light show along with the wind and rain for now.

This week I'm working on abstract studies. Today's is the first of three small acrylic studies I painted using knife , brush and a stick. You really have to let your imagination work for you, although you do consider each mark you make as you go along. The first mark can be random, but those that follow must have a purpose. I enjoy working on the problems of painting in this style. For me sometimes, it really encourages a lot more thinking about the next step than representational painting does.
